Hakushu 18YO

hakushu 18yo.jpg

Hakushu 18yo

Suntory began in 1899 when Shinjiro Torii founded the Torii Shoten store in Osaka. Over the next decade he developed a range of aged Japanese spirits, but also dreamed of creating an original Japanese whisky. In 1923 he realised that dream when he founded the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan’s first single malt whisky distillery on the outskirts of Kyoto. By 1937 Suntory was well established, and Japan''s love affair with whisky had begun. In 1973 Shinjiro''s son Keizo Saji decided to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Japanese whisky-making and push the boundaries of Japanese whisky, building the Hakushu Distillery - in the following decades Suntory has added the Single Malt Yamazaki 1984, Suntory Hibiki in 1989, followed by the Single Malt Hakushu in 1994.

Production

Pronounced ''Hack-shoo'', meaning ''white sand bar'', Hakushu West distillery opened in 1973, in a dense forest at the foot of Mount Kaikomagatake in the southern Japanese Alps near the town of Hokuto in Yamanashi Prefecture. The altitude high and cool climate lend a refreshing and crisp character. In 1981 a new distillery was built: known as Hakushu East, this is now the main production site, with twelve stills of varying shapes and are all directly heated by coal fires, it produces a wide range of whiskies. The Hakushu distillery is blessed with a very particular microclimate, luxurious forests, and water offering a rare softness and purity, only made possible by filtration of rain and snow through thousand-year-old granite rocks. Production is very traditional, and uses lightly peated barley, double distillation in pot stills, followed by maturation in a combination of American oak, used Sherry and Japanese Mizunara oak casks.

Yamazaki 18yo

December 17, 2016 Ray Rogers

Shinjiro Torii, the founder of the Suntory company, was a pharmaceutical wholesaler importing liquor from the West before he was inspired to create a uniquely Japanese whisky. In 1923 he built the country's first malt whisky distillery (in fact, the first of its kind outside of Scotland) on a site in the Vale of Yamazaki outside Kyoto where pure water, a diverse climate and high humidity made it an ideal environment for whisky production and maturation. To complete the formula, Torii hired Masataka Taketsuru (of Nikka fame) who had studied the art of distilling in Scotland. In 1929, the company introduced Suntory Shirofuda (Japanese for white label), Japan's first genuine domestically produced whisky. Kakubin (square bottle), a premium Japanese whisky, was born in 1937. The whiskies have become more and more sophisticated over the decades, in particular the older bottlings under the Yamazaki label.

Local malting of barley was abandoned in 1969 and today malted barley is bought from Scotland. A significant number of European oak x-Sherry casks (mainly oloroso) make up the maturation regime for this whisky; second come x-Bourbon American oak casks, then a small percentage (approx 5%) from the domestic Japanese oak species, 'Mizunara'. Japanese oak tends to impart spicier, sweeter and sometimes more tannic notes than the previous two. Experimentation continues with sandalwood and cedar as well as casks which have previously contained Japanese Plum wine.

Laphroaig Triple Wood

May 10, 2016 Ray Rogers

Laphroaig Triple Wood has enjoyed a triple maturation in 3 types of cask. The first maturation in American oak, ex-bourbon barrels, and then transferred into small 19th century style Quarter Casks for a second maturation. The final maturation is in specially selected, large European oak, Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a wonderfully rich and powerful Islay single malt.

Ardmore Legacy

The Ardmore Legacy Pack

The Ardmore distillery has just launched The Ardmore Legacy, a lightly peated Highland single malt

The Ardmore Legacy continues the distillery’s history of producing the only traditionally peated Highland single malt whisky and will replace Ardmore Traditional Cask as its core expression.

A lightly peated, sweet dram, The Ardmore Legacy offers the ideal introduction to peated single malts.  Combining notes of creamy vanilla, smoky charcoal, sweet honey and savoury spices with a pleasant smoky taste, The Ardmore Legacy is a full-bodied and smooth dram with the typical Ardmore dry, spicy and long-lasting finish.

The expression also brings a new premium look for the brand with its eagle icon firmly at the heart of the packaging design.  The bottle label and outer tube feature a splendid copper foil eagle in full flight, acknowledging their rare golden eagle neighbours and representing an adherence to tradition.  The eye-catching monochrome backdrop encompasses a map design conveying the distillery’s Speyside location and heritage.

2014 Lagavulin Limited Edition Cask Strength 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

If the sheer ubiquity of the 16 Year old has rendered it less visible in a market grown accustomed to notice the novel and exciting, Lagavulin's annual 'vintage' releases are reason enough for many to revisit this distillery. The 12 Year old represents a departure from its more heavy handed, sherry-influenced sibling being exclusively American oak matured and bottled at natural strength.

Adelphi

Adelphi Whisky

The Adelphi Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery, which was founded in 1826 in Glasgow and closed in 1907. The name was revived in 1993, for an independent bottler of Scotch whisky

Adelphi Distillery

The Adelphi Distillery was founded in 1826 by brothers Charles and David Gray. It was sited just south of the Victoria Bridge, at the edge of the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The distillery was operated by the Gray family until 1880, when it was acquired by Messrs A. Walker and Co, a company who already owned large distilleries in Limerick and Liverpool. The Walkers invested in the distillery and added a Coffey still with which to distil grain spirit. By 1886, there were four pot stills and the Coffey still in full production. The distillery had an output of 516,000 imperial gallons (2,350,000 l) of pure alcohol per year. The Adelphi distillery was purchased by Distillers Company (DCL) in 1902, and by 1907 distilling had been stopped completely. The buildings of the distillery were demolished between 1968 and 1970, and the chimney was dismantled in 1971.

Independent bottler

The great-grandson of one of the distillery's founders, Jamie Walker, established the modern day Adelphi independent bottler in 1993, selling the company to Keith Falconer and Donald Houston in 2004. Whiskies are selected by a nosing team chaired by whisky critic Charles MacLean. Adelphi has received numerous Malt Maniacs Awards.

Aberlour

Aberlour A'bunadh Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

A’bunadh (pronounced a-boon-arh), literally meaning 'the origin' in gaelic is a toast to the forefathers of today's whisky makers, and particularly James Fleming who founded the Aberlour distillery in 1879. It's produced in the tradition of 19th century single malts, an era when villagers would come to the distillery to collect their dram straight from the cask, often in apothecary bottles obtained from the village chemist - the inspiration for the a’bunadh bottle shape today.

There is no age statement on this malt. Instead it comprises Aberlours from less than 10 to more than 15 years vatted together, matured exclusively in Spanish oak Oloroso Sherry butts and bottled at cask strength.

Aberlour 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Matured in a combination of sherry and bourbon oak casks for a minimum of 10 years.

Aberlour 12 Year Old Double Cask

The gateway to double cask maturation, Aberlour 12 year old double cask matured has balanced notes of fruits and spices. Golden amber with hints of ruby red. Soft and rounded with fruity notes of red apples. Sherried character and fruity aromas balanced with a rich chocolate, toffee, cinnamon and ginger spices. Warming and lingering with some smoky notes and gentle pepperiness.

Atholl Brose

December 3, 2015 Ray Rogers

Atholl Brose Scotch Whisky Liqueur

Crowned ‘World’s Best Whisky Liqueur’ at the World Whisky Awards 2012.

Made from Gordon & MacPhail's award winning ancient recipe, using herbs and Benromach Speyside single malt Whisky, Atholl Brose has always been considered one the very best in its genre. Now it's official. David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, commented, “The World Whiskies Awards are one of the most high-profile and highly-regarded in the industry, so to have been presented with the title of ‘World’s Best Whisky Liqueur’ really is a fantastic achievement, particularly when you consider that we were judged by a panel of senior industry representatives from around the world.”

The legend behind Atholl Brose stems back to 1475, when the Earl of Atholl foiled a rebellion against the King by the Lord of the Isles, Iain MacDonald, by filling the well he drew water from with honey, oatmeal and whisky. The mixture was so enticing that MacDonald, rather than flee his pursuers, stayed to enjoy the concoction, giving the Earl time to catch him. To this day, the exact recipe that he found so beguiling remains unknown, but Gordon & MacPhail certainly bring its essence to life in this captivating liqueur.

The Balvenie

December 3, 2015 Ray Rogers

THE BALVENIE DoubleWoodAGED 12 YEARS

The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two wood types. Over the period of maturation it is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill European oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt ~ the traditional casks soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.

THE BALVENIE Caribbean CaskAGED 14 YEARS

Caribbean Cask has been matured in traditional oak whisky casks for 14 years, and then ‘finished’ in casks that previously held Caribbean rum.

To create the ideal finish Malt Master David Stewart, filled American oak casks with his own blend of select West Indian rums.

When he judged the casks to be ready, the rum was replaced with the 14 year old spirit and the wood was put to work adding the final touches.

The result is an exceptional single malt whisky with the traditional smooth, honeyed character of The Balvenie, married with notes of toffee and a hint of fruit, with a warm, lingering finish.

THE BALVENIE Single Barrel Sherry CaskAGED 15 YEARS

The Balvenie Single Barrel Sherry Cask has been matured exclusively in a single European oak sherry butt for at least 15 years. The term ‘Single Barrel’ conveys the unique nature of the expression, which has been drawn from a single cask of a single distillation.

THE BALVENIE  DoubleWoodAGED 17 YEARS

To craft DoubleWood 17 Year Old Malt Master David Stewart, who celebrated his 50th year at The Balvenie in 2012, returned to one of his most celebrated achievements – consecutive maturation in two different types of cask, a process often referred to as ‘cask finishing’.  This technique is at the heart of The Balvenie DoubleWood – it sees the whisky matured first in American oak barrels, which impart soft sweet vanilla notes, before being transferred to European oak sherry casks, where the second cask ageing adds rich spicy flavours and a depth and fullness of flavour.

The DoubleWood 17 Year Old is an elder sibling to DoubleWood 12 Year Old and shares its honeyed, spicy characteristics, but it is distinctly different, with deeper vanilla notes, hints of green apple, creamy toffee and a striking richness and complexity.

THE BALVENIE PortWoodAGED 21 YEARS

To create The Balvenie PortWood Aged 21 Years, a marriage of rare Balvenie is transferred to port casks, or pipes, which have held fine port wines. Here it is sampled regularly by The Balvenie Malt Master to ensure that just the right amount of character is imparted by the port casks, enhancing and developing the single malt whilst preserving its original characteristics. In duty free The Balvenie PortWood Aged 21 Years is non chill-filtered and bottled at a higher strength of 47.6% abv.

THE BALVENIE Tun 1509 BATCH NO. 2

For Tun 1509 Batch No. 2, David Stewart selected 32 casks varying in volume, strength and age – 18 traditional American Oak Barrels, 5 American Oak Casks, 7 Sherry Butts and 2 Sherry Hogsheads. The whisky was filled into Tun 1509 and allowed to marry in Warehouse 24 for several months before bottling. The result is a unique expression of The Balvenie – a sweet and elegant single malt whisky with depth and maturity.

Canadian Club

December 3, 2015 Ray Rogers

Hiram Walker, a successful grain merchant, founded what would become Canadian Club® in 1858. Our first distillery was established in Walkerville, Ontario because of the exceptional quality of the local grains there. In those early days, if you wanted whisky, you took your own jug or bottle to the local store and filled it from a generic barrel. We didn’t care for that idea.

Our whisky was different—smooth and easy to drink and we wanted people to know who made it. So we branded our barrels with our name on it, as a signature of confidence and assurance of quality.

Canadians soon took a liking to our whisky, and came to love it as one of their own. In America, it was considered special, because it was sold exclusively in the finer gentlemen’s clubs of the era. Soon, the whisky came to be known by the name “Club Whisky.”

It wasn’t long before Club Whisky began to cultivate popularity around the world. Eventually, its popularity began to affect the sale of American Bourbon in the United States. This forced the U.S. Government to require all Canadian distillers to put the country of origin on their label. And so Club Whisky became Canadian Club® and a legacy was launched.

Canadian Club’s success and longevity can be attributed not only to the style associated with it, but also the quality of the product inside the bottle. We have always prided ourselves on making a superior whisky accessible to everyone who wished to enjoy it.

This is what has allowed our easy-drinking auburn magic to endure the test of time, through trials of history and changing trends and tastes. Today’s Canadian Club® continues to be the choice of savvy drinkers who are looking for a refreshing alternative to beer, a classic cocktail, or simply a great tasting whisky served neat.

Fireball Cinnamon Flavoured Canadian Whisky Liqueur

"If you haven't tried Fireball Cinnamon Whisky yet, just imagine what it would be like to get a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick to the face if his legs were on fire and tasted like cinnamon. Like it, love it, shoot it-- your dad's whisky never tasted so smooth. What happens next is up to you... So goes the rather colourful introduction to this new arrival.

Rumor has it that the original Fireball Whisky recipe was forged sometime in the mid-1980s during the coldest winter Canada had ever seen, when a mixologist turned mad scientist accidentally created a permanent solution to frostbite. The concoction slowly and quietly made its way around North America for a few years, a sort of secret handshake between veteran bartenders.

Glen Grant

December 3, 2015 Ray Rogers

Glen Grant distillery

Glen Grant is a distillery founded in 1840 in Rothes, Speyside, that produces single malt Scotch whisky. Previously owned by Chivas Brothers Ltd, best known for their Chivas Regal blended scotch whisky, Glen Grant was purchased by the Italian company Gruppo Campari in December 2005. It is the biggest selling single malt Scotch whisky in Italy.

History

Glen Grant was founded in 1840, by brothers John and James Grant, two former illegal distillers and smugglers who decided to take out a license. With the sea and port of Garmouth nearby, the River Spey at its feet and barley-growing plains nearby, all the basic ingredients of malt whisky were close at hand. This time the distillery was legal.

By 1872, the founders of Glen Grant Distillery had died. Young James ‘The Major’ Grant, born in 1847, had always taken a keen interest in the distillery and having inherited the business and the title ‘Glengrant’ from his uncle John Grant, he was to prove himself a worthy successor.

Glen Grant Distillery

Stories about ‘The Major’ abound. A legendary innovator, socialiser and traveller, he lived by his own rules and set his own standards. New ideas fascinated him and he wasn’t afraid to explore them. He was the first man in the Highlands to own a car. Glen Grant was the first distillery to have electric light. And he introduced the tall slender stills and purifiers which created the fresh malty flavour and clear colour that defines Glen Grant whisky to this day.

In 1931, Major Grant, the last Glengrant, died, survived by his three daughters and a distillery that had become one of the most famous in the world. Douglas MacKessack, his grandson, was to become his successor.

In 1972, the Glenlivet and Glen Grant Distilleries Ltd amalgamated with the blending concerns of Hill, Thomson and Co.Ltd and Longmorn Distilleries Ltd to become The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. The original family interest in the distilleries was maintained, with two substantial outside shareholders: Courage Ltd, the brewing concern and Suntory Ltd, the Japanese distilling company.

In 2006, Campari acquired Glen Grant, its only whisky, when Allied Domecq was acquired by Pernod Ricard. To this day, Glen Grant continues to be one of the biggest selling single malts worldwide.

Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker is a brand of Scotch whisky owned by Diageo that originated in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. It is the most widely distributed brand of blended Scotch whisky in the world, sold in almost every country, with annual sales of over 130 million bottles.

·         Red Label: an 80 proof (40% ABV) blend of 35 grain and malt whiskies. It is intended for making mixed drinks. According to William Manchester this was the favorite Scotch of Winston Churchill, who mixed it with soda. Red Label has been reported to be former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney's drink of choice.

·         Black Label: an 80 proof (40% ABV) blend of about 40 whiskies, each aged at least 12 years.

·         Double Black Label: A new addition, the whisky was created taking Black Label as a blueprint and adding heavily peated malts and some aged in deeply charred oak casks.

A variety of blends.

·         Green Label: An 86 proof (43% ABV) whisky, it is no longer internationally available, but remains in limited production for the Taiwanese market. Elsewhere, as of mid-2014 it can still occasionally be found in retail channels. This variety is a blended malt, meaning it is made just from single-malts with no grain whisky added. Green Label uses predominantly four malts "drawn from the four corners of Scotland." Each of the malts (Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore, and Caol Ila) was selected by the blender for balance, with each malt whisky matured for a minimum of 15 years.

·         Gold Label: an 80 proof (40% ABV) blend of over 15 single malts. It was derived from Alexander Walker II's blending notes for a whisky to commemorate Johnnie Walker's centenary. His original efforts were thwarted by a shortage of these malts following World War I. Gold Label is commonly bottled at 15 or 18 years. Gold Label has been replaced, without an age statement, as "Gold Label Reserve" as of 2013.

·         Platinum Label: an 80 proof (40% ABV) private blend—aged 18 years to replace the original Gold Label in the Asian market, and sold alongside Gold Label Reserve. It is also available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Poland, South Africa and Israel.

·         Blue Label: Johnnie Walker's premium 80–86 proof (40–43% ABV blend with no age statement. Johnnie Walker Blue Label, also known as Max Walker, is blended to recreate the character and taste of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century. Bottles are numbered serially and sold in a silk-lined box accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. It is one of the most expensive blended Scotches on the market,

·         Johnnie Walker Swing: supplied in a distinctive bottle whose irregular bottom allows it to rock back and forth. It was Alexander II’s last blend: it features a high proportion of Speyside malts, complemented by malts from the northern Highlands and Islay, and is "almost as sweet as a bourbon".
